Old-School Funk to Start Your Week

You’ve probably seen it many times before. But this dunk from the Kentucky-Mississippi State game in 1983 is absurd. And this clip has a little bit of everything.

First, and most importantly, Kentucky’s Dirk Minniefield displays an almost supernatural leaping ability in this utter posterization dunk.

But beyond that, we also get to hear a younger and slightly less overzealous Dick Vitale going into an at-the-time still undeveloped trademark verbal episode, along with a glance at the old...

Courtside Voices

A collection of this week’s best quotes from the college basketball media.

Jeff Goodman
, FoxSports.com:

“LeFlore High coach Otis Hughley…isn’t completely convinced that Kentucky freshman John Wall–widely regarded as the front-runner for the No. 1 pick in next year’s NBA Draft–is even the top point guard on his own team. ‘Eric Bledsoe (pictured, left) may be better,’ Hughley said.” Read more…

Mike Decourcy, The Sporting News:

“Many of the Wildcats are young, but more are...

1,988 Down, 12 to Go

Still the nation’s all-time winningest program, Kentucky is close to becoming the first college basketball program to win 2,000 games. Beautiful.

But somewhwere on the way to this enormous milestone, the Cats allowed the North Carolina Tarheels to tighten a once comfortable gap. Now UK is 12 wins away, while UNC is only 4 back of them, at 16 away. As luck would have it, the two teams will meet in Rupp Arena on December 9th, in a game that could have implications on who gets to 2,000 first.

Where Does Stevenson Fit In?

Perhaps no player better represents the embarrassment of riches on Kentucky’s roster than Perry Stevenson. Stevenson has played a significant role in each of his first three seasons at UK, most recently averaging 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks per game in 2008-09. In fact, the 6’9 senior is 8th all-time in blocked shots in UK history.

And yet, many wonder whether Stevenson will get on the court this year.

Don’t Forget About D-Marc

It may sound ridiculous to call a McDonald’s All-American and consensus top 10 national player a diamond in the rough, but given recent media hyping of the depth and talent on UK’s roster this season, DeMarcus Cousins may be exactly that.

The 6’10, 250-pound Cousins, though lauded by many as the best big man coming out of high school this past season, faces stiff competition at the 4 and 5 positions where Patrick Patterson, Perry Stevenson, Josh Harrellson and fellow super frosh Daniel Orton...

John Wall is a Freak of Nature

At risk of falling victim to the hype and without seeing the young man play a single game in a Kentucky uniform, we here at the BBLD must pose the question: Is John Wall the best recruit in UK history?

Look at the brute power and burst he shows off in this poster tomahawk from last year’s Rucker Park Elite 24 tourney.

Regardless of whether or not Wall meets his stratospheric expectations, one thing is certain. Dude is an extraordinary athlete. Few...

UK 2009-10: Empire Strikes Back

UK 2009-10: Empire Strikes Back

For Kentucky Basketball fans, the past decade has been unkind. The list of lowlights is considerable: seven seasons with double digit losses, multiple early round NCAA tournament flame-outs, ugly home losses to the likes of Gardner-Webb and VMI. And so on.

What’s infinitely worse to Cat fans, during this same period, nearly every hated rival and comparably prestigious college basketball program has tasted a bit of greatness. To wit, in the years since...
