Cats Escape Long Beach State

Playing its third game in 84 hours, the UK Men’s hoop team struggled versus a scrappy Long Beach State team on Wednesday but still found a way to pull away late for a 13 point victory.

John Calipari said it best when describing the lethargy his cats played with:

“I’ve done this so long, there are certain things that you can expect. On the game before Christmas following the 2,000th win where there is a celebration and people are going nuts, there is going to be a little bit of a letdown.”

Uhh…yeah Coach, we agree with you.

The BBL’s quick points from the game:

-DeMarcus Cousins continues his domination against Mid-Majors due to his size-and skill inside.

-John Wall continues to disprove all the naysayers with his 3-point shooting.  His stroke is solid and he looks like he will make it when the Cats need it.

-Patrick Patterson is becoming lethal with his face up game. A go-to player when UK needs a basket.

-DeAndre Liggins’ role is expanding game by game. He played 14 minutes, which was 6th most on the team. Only Ramon Harris played more off the bench.

-Eric Bledsoe next year when its “his team” might threaten a triple-double on any given night in points-rebounds-assists.

UK at 13-0 is off to its best start since the ‘77-‘78 squad. In about two weeks once the College Football season is gone, the scrutiny will become intense as they enter conference play and attempt to chase history with an undefeated record.

The Cats have one more tune-up against Hartford before taking on the Louisville Cardinals in Rupp Arena.

Don’t let the media negativity fool you. UL is improving by leaps and bounds and they definitely have the kind of team that can give UK trouble. They are long and very athletic in the backcourt. And they’ve probably gotten a little sick of the national fawning over the team from Lexington.

The whole nation will be watching come next Saturday.
