The BBL brings some choice quotes from Coach John Calipari, made at the KABC Basketball Clinic in Lexington, Ky., on Sept. 26.
Cal feels UK will be a good shot blocking team this year, saying that if a man hesitates on his drive to the bucket, the Cats will have 2 guys there to block the shot.
Kids wanting to play in the DDM system has helped with recruiting. He said there are a few imitators who claim to run the system but few that truly run it. It is either this or motion, you can’t implement both.
When addressing who will step up and take outside shots this year, Calipari remarked: “I don’t know, Rod Strickland.”
Cousins looks like a beast in practice, Cal said. A 30-point, 20-rebound beast. He wants Cousins to dominate around the rim first and then work on shooting 3s and integrate his perimeter game into the flow of the offense.
Bledsoe and Wall have been best of friends since being on campus. They like to go at each other though. According to Cal, Bledsoe says Wall is the fastest guy he has ever played with, but wouldn’t go as far as to say John is faster than him. Coach again emphasized playing them together.
Calipari mentioned that he thought Mark Krebs was better than a few guys on scholarship under Billy Gillispie. When they told Mark they could possibly scholarship him, Krebs told them they didn’t have to do that. He said he was just happy to be part of the program and wanted to be a part of returning UK to glory. Coach Cal said as soon as Krebs left the office that day he was 100% giving him a scholarship.
Cal thinks DeAndre Liggins will do well in the offense. Said he was a driver playing in a high-low offense driving into two defenders every time, which made him make bad turnovers. With the floor opened up, Cal sees no reason why he shouldn’t play well.go back
